DUBLIN, Calif. — Many Patelco Credit Union customers woke up Monday to find they couldn’t make rent or mortgage payments after a ransomware attack over the weekend.
In a statement posted to its social media channels, the credit union says it required them to shut down some day-to-day banking systems including online banking and the mobile app.
As such, electronic transactions like transfers, direct deposit and payments are not available. Debit and credit card transactions are happening in a limited capacity, Patelco says.
Cash withdrawals and deposits can still be done at Patelco ATMs along with shared branch ATMs.
Branches of Patelco and the call center are currently open but long wait times are expected.
"Unfortunately, this incident has required us to proactively shut down some of our day-to-day banking systems in order to contain and remediate the issue. Importantly, members can still access cash from ATMs. We have engaged a leading third-party cybersecurity forensic firm to help us to investigate and recover as soon as possible," Patleco said in an update.
Patelco is one of the oldest and largest credit unions in the U.S. with several dozen branches in the Bay Area and Sacramento. They’re based in Dublin.
