A pedestrian was hit and killed by a San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office deputy just outside Stockton, Sunday.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Monday that a deputy was driving eastbound on Waterloo Road near a Taco Bell across from Piccoli Road around 11 p.m. when they hit a pedestrian in the lane at an undetermined speed.

Police said the deputy got out of the car and tried to give medical aid the pedestrian. However, the pedestrian died at the scene.

The deputy wasn't hurt during the collision, and the cause remains under investigation. Toxicology results and an identification for the pedestrian are still pending. Police said the pedestrian was possibly a transient.

The crash is being investigated by the sheriff's office, the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol.

Highway 88 was closed in both directions for several hours while the crash was being investigated and has since reopened. The sheriff's office said during the investigation, a vehicle drove through the barricade around 1:30 a.m. The driver was arrested and CHP is conducting an investigation.
