CARMICHAEL, Calif. — Eight people are displaced on Thanksgiving after a turkey-related fire Thursday morning in Carmichael.
It happened around 10:45 a.m. on the 6000 block of Rye Way.
According to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the fire started in the garage of a duplex and was caused by frying a turkey.
Officials say the fire spread to the living space of the unit where it started and caused major damage. The other unit had moderate damage.
Everyone made it out safely and several dogs were rescued by firefighters. Eight people are displaced.
Deep-fried turkey tips
When it comes to deep frying your turkey, always defrost and pat the bird dry before putting it in the boiling hot oil. The fryer should ideally be in the driveway, away from the garage, home or anything flammable. A safe distance is 25-30 feet away.
