Man hospitalized after bear attack in Tuolumne County

Officials said the bear attack happened in Long Barn along North Fork Road.

TUOLUMNE COUNTY, Calif. — A man was hospitalized after being attacked by a bear in Tuolumne County Monday night.

According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the 24-year-old victim was jogging along North Fork Road in Long Barn around 5 p.m.

CDFW says the man saw two bears – a female bear and what’s believed to be a bear cub – on the side of the road. The adult bear charged at him, chasing him up an embankment.

The man hit the bear on the head with a large stick and hid behind a tree. The bear charged again, and the man ran to a car parked on a nearby driveway and climbed on top.

The bear swiped at him during the chase, causing injuries to his legs, back and torso. The homeowner saw what was going on and made noise to scare the bear. She then called 911.

The man was taken to Adventist Health in Sonora where he’s listed in stable condition.

Samples were collected by swabbing the man’s wounds and they will be taken to a forensic wildlife laboratory to be analyzed.
