Police: Man on parole for murder in custody after deadly stabbing in Ione

Police said the incident appears to be a random act of violence

IONE, Calif. — One person was killed and two others injured on Shakeley Lane in Ione, Monday.

Ione Police say they’re investigating the death as a homicide.

Police Chief John Alfred said officers responded to a reported stabbing along Violet Lane, but redirected to Shakeley Lane upon learning that the suspect was heading in that direction.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene and the two others were taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The identities of the victims have not been released, but Alfred said the deceased victim was a resident of Ione. Of the two people hurt, one was also from Ione and the other was an on-duty PG&E employee. PG&E was unable to share additional details regarding their employee's condition.

The suspect arrested was Joseph Stephens Jenkins, 34-year-old transient of Ione. Alfred said he was on parole for attempted murder.

"Mr. Jenkins was recently released from state prison on parole," Alfred said. "This incident appears to be a random act of violence," said Alfred.

No additional details surrounding the incident have been released.

(Editor's Note: This story has been updated to clarify that Jenkins was on parole for attempted murder. On Tuesday, Chief Alfred said he misspoke the previous day when he said he was on parole for murder.)
