SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Police Department is investigating after a woman became unresponsive during an arrest and later died.
According to police, it started on Nov. 16 when officers responded to a report of a woman trespassing on private property on the 3600 block of Fulton Avenue. Private security told police she had been there for several days, and officers gave her a written trespassing notice.
Then, around 7 a.m. Nov. 17, officers responded again after private security reported that she was in a vehicle on the property and refusing to leave. Police say she told them she was having vehicle problems and so they requested a tow to help her.
Around 11:30 a.m., an officer came back to the property and found the woman was still there. The officer again told her to leave while offering shelter and transportation options. Police say the woman declined the help, so she was arrested for trespassing.
Police say she was handcuffed and put into the back of a patrol vehicle after a ‘brief struggle.’ She then became unresponsive.
The woman was taken to a hospital where she ultimately died on Sunday, Nov. 24.
Police say they’ve started a death-in-custody investigation since she had a medical emergency while being detained. The woman hasn’t been identified yet.
