Officer shoots suspected burglar, Tracy Police say

The suspected burglar is in critical, but stable condition, according to police. No officers were injured.

TRACY, Calif. — At least one Tracy Police officer opened fire on a suspected burglar during an investigation early Sunday morning, the department said.

Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a Best Buy warehouse in the 6000 block of Hopkins Road after reports came in of multiple people breaking into parked trailers, police said in a news release.

Officers say they saw at least two people on the warehouse property when they got to the scene. Police chased the two people, who officials described as suspects, on foot.

"Shortly after confronting the suspects, an officer involved shooting occurred," police said in the news release. "One of the suspects was struck by several rounds and was immediately given medical care by the officers."

An ambulance took the injured person to a hospital where he is listed in critical, but stable condition, police said.

Officers detained two other suspected burglars without injuries. Authorities believe a fourth suspect was able to leave the scene on foot.

While police have not identified the outstanding burglar, they do not believe there is a threat to the public. No officers were injured during the shooting and investigation.

Officials with the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office and the California Department of Justice are investigating the shooting. The Tracy Police Department says its officers will investigate the burglary.

Witnesses and people with information are asked to reach out to Detective Lissette Ortiz at 209-831-6569 or Lissette.Ortiz@TracyPD.com.
