RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — First responders in Sacramento County said Sunday they found a body off the American River amid searches for a man last seen without a life jacket on the waters of the American River on Saturday.
The body found was that of a man, estimated to be in his 30s, according to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokesman Capt. Parker Wilbourn. The case will now be handed off to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.
Sac Metro Fire led the search. Firefighters searched the river near Ambassador and Hagan Parks. Officials began their search around 11:28 a.m. Saturday.
According to fire officials, the man was rafting down the river with a larger party near Clay Banks. At some point, he was swept underwater and did not resurface.
Search efforts included the use of boats, a UAV and a helicopter. After searching for more than two hours, officials said they switched their search to a recovery, not expecting to find the man alive.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office dive team was requested at the scene and is expected to start searching underwater once it's safe. Sacramento County Regional Parks also aided in the search.
