7 cars involved in crash along Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova

Officials said the crash happened on eastbound Highway 50 near Sunrise Avenue.

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — One person was taken to hospital after a crash involving seven cars along Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova Wednesday afternoon.

According to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the seven car crash happened on eastbound Highway 50 near Sunrise Avenue. 

Officials said there were two patients, but only one was taken to the hospital.

According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. 

Police said a man was driving a Toyota Tacoma at a high rate of speed when he veered to the right and sideswiped a Subaru Forester. The Tacoma then veered out of control, left the roadway and went up a dirt embankment near the Sunrise Boulevard off-ramp, hitting a Toyota 4-Runner on the off-ramp. Both overturned after the collision. 

A Toyota Corolla, Subaru Outback, Toyota Camry and Toyota Tundra were all hit by either the Tacoma or 4-Runner while they were the Sunrise Boulevard off-ramp.

Police said the driver of the 4-Runner was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Alcohol and/or drug impairment was not a factor in the crash, according to police.
