SACRAMENTO - A Rio Linda man who disconnected all of his roommate's phones and shot her dead at close range in her bedroom last May was found guilty by a jury of second degree murder, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.
Stephen Brainard was also determined to have discharged a firearm resulting in death in the April 1, 2013 murder of Julia Bullinger. The D.A.'s office said the victim and Brainard had previously been in a relationship and Brainard still lived in the same home with her.
Brainard was arrested May 1, 2013 after making a call to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department saying he shot Bullinger, D.A. spokesperson Shelly Orio said. When sheriff deputies arrived at the Lilac Lane home, Brainard refused to surrender. Orio said he came out of the house after a four-hour standoff and was arrested.
Brainnard is set to be sentenced May 9 in Sacramento Superior Court.
