River and Ranch Fires: Evacuation orders issued for several Lake County communities

According to the sheriff's department, the River Fire poses an imminent threat to Lakeport. Residents are told to leave immediately and seek shelter in Middletown.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department has issued two mandatory evacuation orders for the cities of Lakeport and Upper Lake.

The sheriff's department first issued a Mandatory Evacuation order for the City of Lakeport around 3:30 p.m. due to the encroaching River Fire.

According to the sheriff’s department, the River Fire poses an imminent threat to Lakeport. Residents are told to leave immediately and seek shelter in Middletown, at the Twin Pines Casino, 22223 Hwy. 29, in Middletown.

The mandatory evacuation area is south of 20th Street, west of Clear Lake, north of Highland Springs Road, and east of the Mendocino-Lake County Line.

Just before 5:30 p.m., the town of Upper Lake was added to the Mandatory Evacuation order because of the Ranch Fire, according to the sheriff’s department.

Residents are asked to leave via southbound State Highway 20. Evacuation shelters have been established at Lower Lake High School and Twin Pines Casino in Middletown.

Around 6:30 p.m., additional evacuation orders were issued for Western Lake County, including the communities of Blue Lakes, Nice, Witter Springs, Bachelor Valley, Scotts Valley and Saratoga Springs.

At last update, CAL FIRE reports the River Fire to be five percent contained. It has burned just more than 14,200 acres of land. The Ranch Fire, according to CAL FIRE, has burned more than 16,300 acres of land and is also at five percent contain. Both fires are part of the so-called Mendocino Complex. Six homes have been destroyed in the fires and more than 10,000 are still being threatened.
