RIVERBANK, Calif. — A grandmother and her granddaughter are both in critical condition after they were hit by a car walking to school Thursday morning in Riverbank.
Sgt. Luke Schwartz, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office, said the collision was reported just before 8 a.m. in the area of West Gate Drive and Saxon Way.
The driver stayed on scene and cooperated with investigators.
Sgt. Schwartz said the grandmother, 67, and the granddaughter, 9, were rushed to hospitals, with the girl eventually being taken to an out-of-county specialty hospital.
The grandmother is out of surgery but is in critical condition in the ICU, according to Sgt. Schwartz. He said there was early conflicting information on the girl's condition, but at the time, she was initially stable enough to be taken by ground ambulance to the hospital and was alert and talking the whole time. The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, but alcohol, drugs and medicine are not suspected as factors.
