Fashion show in Rocklin draws controversy for hiring drag artist as host

The backlash from members of The Family Church in Roseville, and its leader, Matthew Oliver, was immediate online, followed by outrage in the real world.

ROCKLIN, Calif. — A fashion show set to take place in Rocklin has sparked controversy after hiring a drag performer to host its family friendly event.

The Wildflower Daydreams boutique rented the Rocklin Event Center for its third anniversary event on March 2. Hosting and performing at the event is Sacramento-area drag artist A La Mode.

The backlash from members of The Family Church in Roseville, and its leader, Matthew Oliver, was immediate online and followed by outrage in the real world.

On Tuesday, members of the church crowded Rocklin City Council chambers to denounce the event and complain to city leaders.

“It’s inappropriate, it’s unacceptable, and we’ve got to stand up and say that’s not allowed in our community,” Oliver said.

Wildflower Daydreams owner Michelle Honath said it was hurtful to see the matter taken to such extremes.

Honath said the performance will be appropriate for children, with no stripping or sexual content involved.

Oliver also called out the show on social media as a fundraiser for progressive organization NorCal Resist, alleging it had ties to Antifa – a charge that Honath rejects.

Despite the marathon public comment session, Rocklin Mayor Greg Janda would not state anything for the record regarding the fashion show.

It’s still on the calendar for March 2.
