Sacramento City Council names Ronald Reagan's East Sacramento house as historic landmark

George Pollock originally built the house in 1925 and was important to the construction of the Tower Bridge and Shasta Dam. Reagan would live there while governor.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento house that once served as the home to man who helped build the Tower Bridge and President Ronald Reagan has been deemed a historic landmark.

Sacramento City Council recently designated the East Sacramento home as a historic landmark, according to the city.

The city said George and Irma Pollock built the Tudor Revival-style house at 1341 45th St. in 1925. Pollock was a contractor and served as the contractor for his own home.

He created his own engineering and construction business at age 34. Some of the projects he was involved in include Sacramento’s Tower Bridge, Shasta Dam and a naval operations base at Long Beach and Point Hueneme.

Pollock died in 1950 and the home was sold to Dain Domich, who was elected to the city council in 1960. He served for eight years.

In 1967, Domich leased the house to Ronald and Nancy Reagan. The Reagans lived there during his two terms as governor, then they bought the home from Domich. Reagan was elected the 40th president of the United States and served from 1981-89.

From there, the house was bought by Art and Susan Savage. The city says Art Savage was critical in building Sutter Health Park and bringing in the Sacramento River Cats.

“Listing this property as a landmark ensures this distinctive house will be preserved,” said Henry Feuss, an associate planner. “This is a notable addition to the register due to the notorious individuals that lived here; it’s not often we have a nationally recognized former owner.”

The city says the home has seen very few changes and distinguishing characteristics remain intact.
