ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Roseville will get a Women's Premier Soccer League team starting in spring 2024.
According to the Roseville Youth Soccer Club, the team will be known as Iron Rose FC, reflecting the railroad history and city's name.
As part of the Women's Premier Soccer League, players will be part of an amateur league for women's soccer, below the National Women's Soccer League.
"Roseville Soccer is excited to be a part of the massive growth in women's soccer. We too see this region as a hotbed for talented women's players and we are excited to extend more opportunities for them to play the game at the highest level," the Roseville Youth Soccer Club wrote in a statement.
Iron Rose FC will operate through a partnership with the Roseville Youth Soccer Club, a nonprofit, volunteer-based club to launch youth development programs, according to WPSL.
The Iron Rose FC posted a video on Instagram, sharing the women's team announcement and the said a men's team will be coming in 2025.
“Our community has long been proud to be the home of Olympians and Super Bowl and World Series winners. We’re thrilled to welcome these two semi-pro soccer teams to Roseville,” Roseville Mayor Bruce Houdesheldt said in a statement. “Strengthening sports tourism is one of our Council’s strategic priorities. Our investment in the 10-field Soccer Complex that broke ground in West Roseville several months ago is the latest testament to that. This is the kind of activity that we were hoping to attract, and I know the athletes and fans will find a warm welcome here.”
Iron FC will be fronted by four managing owners Peter J. Wilt, Michael Hitchcock, Chris Knowlton, and Evin Nadaner.
“With the women's game ever so growing in popularity and success, and Roseville Soccer Club’s membership being 50% female, it made sense for us to join the WPSL. As the designated Iron Rose Development Academy, we will now attract the best female players to embark on their dream of playing for Iron Rose." said Roseville Club President Kevin Stringer in a statement.
Iron Rose FC will be the Women's Premier Soccer League's third expansion team in California for the 2024 season along with The Town FC in the East Bay and Rebels Soccer Club in Southern California.
