ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Two curling teams out of the Sacramento area recently qualified for the USA Curling Arena National Championships next month. The men's and women's curling teams of the Wine Country Curling Club, based in Roseville, will be heading to Nationals next month.
"We're ready. We're really excited to head to Minnesota and represent Roseville and the Sacramento area," said Lee Ann Shearing.
Shearing is one-fourth of the women's team who qualified for the national championships. The team is led by Katie Feldman and practices at Skatetown Ice Arena in Roseville.
"We're super excited to go to the competition and show them what California does, and how we do it," said Feldman.
So what's the secret to their success this year?
"Curling is a lot about skills and strategy but it's almost 100% about the people you curl with and we like each other. We communicate well. We work through things. We get along and have fun," said Shearing.
However, they're not the only team out of Roseville heading to the National Championships. The men's team out of Wine Country Country Club, Team Spangler, is also in final preparations to head to the tournament.
"We're absolutely looking to win it. We think we have a pretty good chance. In the past, we've always done well. We've even placed third before. This year, we're looking to go all the way and take the gold," said Camren Spangler, skipper of Team Spangler.
Regardless of what happens at Nationals, both teams are just looking forward to the experience.
"I love going and hanging out with the other competitors and talking about the challenges they face and doing curling in their respective regions," said Feldman.
The club wants to encourage people to give curling a try.
"It's a very easy sport to learn. It's not easy to master, but come out and give it a try. Anyone can do it at any age," said Shearing.
Nationals will be held at Curl Mesabi in Eveleth, Minnesota from November 8, 2023 to Nov. 12, 2023.
