SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif — A Sacramento County family and their pets were able to escape a house fire, which likely started in the garage, according to Sacramento Metro Fire.
The fire happened on Sunrise Greens Drive, near Florin High School around 2:30 pm.
Metro Fire says Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies quickly jumped in to help three people before they arrived.
“Able to pull out three of the occupants who were still inside, they had no idea there was a fire in their garage,” said Parker Wilbourn, Battalion Chief with Metro Fire.
The deputies were able to evacuate three people and four birds before the fire spread.
Officials say it was a garage fire that extended inside the home and attic which caused part of the roof to collapse.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries from falling dry wall and was treated at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Colder months are a busy time for fire departments. As many gather and cook for the holiday season, Metro Fire hoping safety equipment is up to date.
“It is important to check your smoke alarms and practice your home fire escape plan. Use LED candles instead of traditional candles. Just be mindful of anything you are cooking and stay in the kitchen,” said Battalion Chief Wilbourn.
