FOLSOM, Calif. — The Folsom Pro Rodeo at the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena will include performances from the first-ever Sacramento County Sheriff’s Rodeo during its July run.
Folsom’s rodeo runs July 3-5 and the pro-am rodeo put on by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office will take place Saturday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper said the point of the rodeo is to raise money for law enforcement including the office’s equipment and trainings. The event will feature professional rodeo performers unaffiliated with law enforcement and some amateur performers from the sheriff’s office.
“I’m going to ride a horse,” Cooper told ABC10.
Cooper said any practice he or any law enforcement employees put forth toward their rodeo performance would be done voluntarily and on their own time. He mentioned one man in the sheriff’s office does team roping, an event featuring two mounted riders and cattle.
“I wanted to do a sheriff’s rodeo to benefit the community and also help the department with equipment and things of that nature,” Cooper said. “I thought the first year of launching it — it was easier to book it with the Folsom Pro Rodeo. So, we got together with the folks, and they’ve been very helpful in setting this up.”
Events include:
- Hide racing.
- Toro totters, a four-way teeter totter where participants jump to avoid a bull.
- Mutton busting, or sheep riding, for kids.
- Fireworks.
