Sacramento County voters face decision on Measure O to fund fire district

Measure O aims to authorize funds for construction, expansion, and replacement of outdated facilities and equipment.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento County voters will soon decide on Measure O, a proposed bond measure that seeks to raise $415 million to fund the Sacramento Metro Fire District. If approved, the measure would increase property taxes by approximately $19 per $100,000 of assessed value.

According to Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, the current fleet of Type 1 fire engines, purchased in 2011, is nearing the end of its lifespan, with many vehicles accumulating between 150,000 and 300,000 miles. He noted that the fire stations, some built in the 1960s, have not kept pace with modern equipment demands.

"We are stretched thin, both with resources and the capabilities of our fire stations and equipment," said Wilbourn, emphasizing the urgent need for upgrades.

Measure O aims to authorize funds for construction, expansion, and replacement of outdated facilities and equipment to enhance the district's services and maintain rapid 911 response times. Supporters argue that modernizing the district is essential for ensuring effective emergency responses.

In the ballot arguments, the Sacramento Taxpayers Association initially questioned whether alternative funding sources were available and cautioned voters about the increase in property taxes. However, following discussions with Metro Fire, the association has since taken a neutral stance on the measure.

Director of Operations Nick Bloise stated that the dialogue with the taxpayers association helped clarify concerns regarding funding.

"These upgrades are vital for life-saving equipment, allowing us to deliver the highest possible service when the community needs it most," Wilbourn added.

For Measure O to pass, it requires a two-thirds majority support from voters. If successful, the measure would also mandate the creation of a Citizen’s Oversight Committee to ensure transparency in how the funds are spent.
