Sacramento man convicted after online group poses as underage boy to lure him

The organization People v. Preds uses decoy profiles and AI to pose as minors and communicate with predators seeking encounters with children.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento man was convicted Thursday of communicating with a minor with the intent to commit an illegal sex act.

According to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office, 45-year-old Jayson Proctor was convicted of one count of communicating with a minor with the intent to commit an illegal sex act and one count of arranging a meeting with a minor to engage in lewd and lascivious behavior.

The district attorney’s office says Proctor was exposed by a person behind an online organization named People v. Preds.

The organization uses decoy profiles and AI to pose as minors and communicate with predators seeking encounters with children. They record the conversations and then report it to law enforcement who respond to the meeting location and arrest the person who communicated with the decoy.

In this case, Proctor spoke with a decoy profile pretending to be a 15-year-old boy on Sept. 6. The conversation lasted 10 days.

The profile and Proctor agreed to meet in the parking lot of a Carl’s Jr in West Sacramento for sex. Proctor was instead met by police who arrested him.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 23, 2024. He faces a maximum sentence of four years and eight months.

People v. Preds gave ABC10 the following statement on the conviction:

"State legislatures all around the country have passed laws to protect our children from online child predators because the citizens want action to protect their children. DA Preston Schaub, West Sacramento PD and Yolo County DA's office are a model example for prosecutors and law enforcement everywhere on how to address the problem of child predators by applying and enforcing those laws.

I only wish prosecutors in my local counties of San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and others would demonstrate their concern for child safety with such consistent application of the law as here in Yolo County.

Out of the 111 child predators arrested within the last 13 months, 22 of them have been convicted, with over 50 open cases pending in the courts."
