SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The race for Sacramento mayor is heating up between Flojaune 'Flo' Cofer and Kevin McCarty with less than six months until the November election,
Cofer was the top vote-getter in the March primary at 28% with second-place finisher McCarty at 22%.
Even though Cofer had a 6% buffer, she faces an uphill battle to beat McCarty in November, according to Capitol Weekly editor-in-chief Rich Ehisen.
"We have a candidate in Dr. Cofer who's admittedly very progressive, very non-mainstream who got about 30% of the vote. We had three other candidates in the primary who were center-left who took about 65% of the vote. The odds of the people who voted for the center-left candidates going en-masse to the candidate they didn't vote for in the primary is unlikely, but it could happen," Ehisen said.
The two main candidates who didn't qualify for the November election, Richard Pan and former city councilman Steve Hansen, had a combined 43% of the votes. Ehisen says much of the support will likely go to McCarty.
"The odds are very, very long that Dr. Cofer will come out on top in November," Ehisen said.
Andrew Acosta, the campaign consultant for McCarty, told ABC10 about the outlook for November.
“I know Kevin has connected with Pan and Hansen. I’m not sure there has been an official endorsement. I am assuming there will be more folks who move to support Kevin over the next couple of months," Acosta said.
