Sacramento mayor's race: Pan, Hansen, McCarty take early leads mayoral race

The initial results are vote by mail and vote center ballots that were returned and processed through the day before Election Day.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — A few hundred votes separate the top candidates in the Sacramento mayoral race. The first wave of ballots has favored Richard Pan, Steve Hansen and Kevin McCarty, but there's still many votes to be counted.

Six Sacramento mayoral candidates qualified for the March 5 Primary ballot. Unless one candidate gets more than 50% of the vote, the top two vote-getters will advance to the General Election in November.

Current Mayor Darrell Steinberg announced last year he will not seek a third term, so he will finish out his current term and step aside at the end of the year.

The initial results are vote by mail and vote center ballots that were returned and processed through the day before Election Day.

After 10 p.m., the updates will come approximately every two hours until all vote centers have reported.

Votes will be counted during the next few weeks. Vote-by-mail ballots have to be postmarked by March 5 and arrive at county elections office by March 12. The last day for county elections offices to certify the election results is April 4.
