'It's huge for me': Sacramento skateboarder Miles Silvas reflects on being named Thrasher's Skater of the Year

The 28-year-old grew up here and left for the Bay Area last year, but he’s still got love for his hometown.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A skater with roots in Sacramento received quite the recognition! Miles Silvas, 28, was named Thrasher Magazine’s Skater of the Year.

ABC10 spoke with Silvas about growing up in Sacramento and what the accolade means to him.

"It's huge. I mean it's huge for me, it's been a goal of mine for a long time and then just for Sacramento… I think it's big too,” said Silvas.

The 28-year-old grew up here and left for the Bay Area last year, but he’s still got love for his hometown.

"It shaped who I am and kind of gave me my entire skateboarding upbringing and community,” he said.

It was a community built at places like Mather Skate Park. Silvas says he’s skated there since it opened, so it’s no surprise that a friend from his childhood was there and had a lot to say.

"I think he was 12 and he was exceptionally better at skateboarding than anyone else,” said Andy Dicker.

And Dicker was excited to hear about the recognition, too.

"Finally everybody figured it out. We've known since a young age of how exceptionally talented Miles was and is and is going to be. It's great that everybody else figured it out,” said Dicker.

Silvas hopes his accomplishment will inspire other local skaters.

"They've probably been seeing me at skate parks and local places for a long time, so for someone to make it it probably makes them feel like they could do it too, which is cool,” he said.

So what’s next for Silvas? More skating, more products and, of course, learning new tricks.
