Police are trying to figure out what happened to the child before they were taken to the hospital.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento police are investigating after a toddler was hospitalized with ‘significant injuries’ early Friday morning. Police add the mother’s boyfriend was arrested.

The man was identified as 53-year-old Elbert Pritchett of Sacramento. He was arrested on felony child abuse and firearm charges.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers responded to the hospital around 3 a.m. after the child was taken there from the 8200 block of La Almendra Way.

The child is listed in critical condition. Police did not say what caused the child’s injuries.

"Based on the child’s significant injuries and critical status, detectives from our homicide unit and child abuse unit responded to take over the investigation," police said.

Investigators are interviewing the family and trying to figure out what happened before the toddler arrived at the hospital.
