Unextinct: New Sacramento Zoo exhibit digitally revives 49 extinct, endangered species

The exhibit runs from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday starting Dec. 26 and ending March 9, 2024.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Extinct animals will digitally roam the grounds of the Sacramento Zoo starting Tuesday in William Land Regional Park.

“Unextinct” is a strictly nighttime experience running from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday starting Dec. 26 and ending March 9, 2024. It's put on by Mangolin Creative, a Los Angeles-based design studio specialized in immersive designs with an emphasis on zoos and theme park projects, according to a news release.

“With Unextinct, we are using incredible set work and theatrics to bring a world of colorful illusions and extraordinary wildlife to guests,” said Morgan Richardson, the Mangolin Creative co-founder.

Jason Jacobs is the Sacramento Zoo director. He says the exhibit employs a variety of lights and sounds offering guests a chance to see animals they could have only dreamed of seeing before.

The team bringing Unextinct to life is made up of former Disney Imagineers, and the exhibit allows guests to walk through a “realm” full of 49 extinct or endangered animals, the news release said.

The run at the Sacramento Zoo marks the event’s global premiere.

“We are so proud to be the premier location for Unextinct,” said Jacobs.

Patrons can book their experience at unextinctlive.com and view a live schedule which will be updated to reflect any weather changes.

The Sacramento Zoo houses nearly 400 native, rare and endangered animals and is one of more than 200 accredited institutions of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Event coordinators say it welcomes roughly 500,000 guests per year.
