SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento firefighters worked Wednesday to put out a large fire at what a witness said is an abandoned business complex on Freeport Boulevard.
Duane Kushida, who works at a dog shop nearby, called 911 when he spotted what he thought was a barbecue fire near the building.
"I thought someone was cooking something outside," he said. "But within five minutes the side of the building was on fire...by the time the fire department got here it was curling around and up onto the roof."
Kushida said the building is abandoned, and he isn't surprised that there was a fire.
According to Sacramento Fire Capt. Keith Waite, the fire along the 6600 block of Freeport Boulevard broke out around 11:54 a.m.
Waite said the fire was on the second floor of the building when they got there and quickly spread up into the attic, causing the roof to collapse.
No firefighters were injured and an initial search of the building indicates that there were no people inside, Waite said.
Arson investigators are working to determine what caused the fire at the vacant commercial office building.
Around noon Sacramento Fire tweeted that drivers in the area should seek alternative routes. Click here or check out the map below to find a new route.
