SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — A couple was arrested Wednesday as a result of a sex trafficking investigation conducted by Sacramento County sheriff's deputies.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said it began an investigation into the sex trafficking of a 12-year-old and 14-year-old in October 2023, according to a social media post by the sheriff's office Thursday.
Law enforcement alleges Jacob Reyes, 31, and Itzel Medina-Nieto, 26, were involved in the minors’ trafficking. The sheriff’s office said Reyes repeatedly sexually assaulted the 14-year-old while victimizing both minors as sex workers in Sacramento, San Francisco and Oakland, according to the release.
Later in the investigation, deputies learned Medina-Nieto was involved in the trafficking of the 14-year-old, the release said.
Reyes and Medina-Nieto were booked into Sacramento County Main Jail early Thursday morning, jail records show.
Reyes faces three felony charges involving prostitution of a minor, jail records show; Medina-Nieto faces one felony charge involving prostitution of a minor, and a misdemeanor charge of destroying evidence.
Reyes’ bail is set at $1 million, and Medina-Nieto’s is set at $500,000, jail records show.
They are both set to appear in Sacramento County Superior Court on Friday afternoon.
Deputies said both juvenile victims were willing to receive help and cooperated in the investigation.
“Sadly, this is rare as most minor victims do not cooperate due to the influence, fear and force used by their traffickers,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Deputies said anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115, the Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443–4357 or use the P3 Tips app.
Tips leading to an arrest are eligible for a cash reward of up to $1000, according to law enforcement.
