A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed inside a North Highlands home overnight Tuesday.
Family members said the woman was Erin Hanks, a mother of two young children. Her son is 5 years old and her daughter is 11 months and is turning a year old on Thursday.
The shooting was reported to the Sacramento County Sheriffs' Department a little after 12:40 a.m. at a home on Galbrath Drive near Larchmont Drive.
It's unknown whether the shooting was a drive-by or if the suspect was on foot, but the department said shots were fired from outside the home. Sheriff's spokesperson Tony Turnbull said there is no reason to believe the shooting was gang-related.
Family members said Hanks was cleaning up the bedroom after coming home from work when she was hit by gunfire.
Hanks' two children, boyfriend, and a family friend who lived with them were also inside the house, but they were not injured.
Hanks' mother says their family is originally from the Bay Area, but moved to Sacramento for a better life.
Homicide detectives were starting an investigation and have no suspect description or motive at this time.
This shooting comes after a string of nearly half a dozen shootings in Sacramento on Monday, one of which was fatal.
