More than 2,400 applications received for Sacramento County's guaranteed income pilot

The Family First Economic Support Pilot would provide some Sacramento County families with $725 a month for a year.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — It's only been a matter of days, but thousands of people have already applied for Sacramento County's guaranteed income program.

A spokesperson for Sacramento County said more than 2,400 applications have already been received as of Oct. 2. Applications opened on Sept. 30.

The Family First Economic Support Pilot would provide some Sacramento County families with $725 a month for a year — with an expected first payment of Dec. 15. There's no restrictions on how that family can spend that money.

Despite the thousands of applications, 200 will be randomly selected, and they'll have to meet certain requirements. Those requirements include:

  • Being parents or legal guardians of Black/African American, American Indian or Alaska Native children between ages 0 and 5.
  • Families must have an annual household income under 200% of the federal poverty level. For example, your annual household income needs to be less than $40,880 if two people live in the household.
  • Families must live in one of these zip codes: 95815, 95821, 95823, 95825, 95828 or 95838.

How to apply for the guaranteed income pilot

Applications for the pilot will continue until 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 13. They can only be done electronically.

A link to the application can be found HERE.

The 200 applications will be chosen by a random number generator for the initial selection. However, applicants will be asked to provide verification of eligibility before they're enrolled. Individual meetings would also be held with selected applicants to review potential impacts.

People will start learning whether they've been selected the week of Oct. 14.

Note, according to the program, the cash assistance will not impact eligibility or benefit calculations related to CalWORKS or CalFresh.
