Employee helps evacuate Sacramento bowling alley after fire starts nearby

Officials say the fire started outside a bowling alley.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento firefighters battled a structure fire at a bowling alley on Freeport Boulevard.

The fire was reported around 1 p.m. Sunday in the 5800 block of Freeport Boulevard, at AMF Land Park Lanes.

Fire officials say it began as a couch fire outside of the structure. No injuries have been reported, thanks in part to an employee who fire crews say helped to evacuate the building.

"One of the employees ran back inside and quickly alerted everyone that they did have a fire on the exterior of the building and ordered everyone out," said Sacramento Fire Department Public Information Officer Justin Sylvia. "We're just kind of taking this slow so no one gets hurt, but also keeping in mind we're trying to protect as much property inside of the building as possible."

Natasha Anderson, an employee at AMF Land Park Lanes, said the day started like any other until she went outside to take some boxes to the dumpster.

"I ran in the building and was like, 'fire, fire,'" said Anderson. "I'm so glad we got everyone out at the time we did because all the lanes, all the smoke was coming through the lanes and it was really bad."

Crews from across the county responded to the blaze, including 10 fire engines and six trucks.  Investigators are working to determine what caused the couch to catch fire.
