Sacramento area Dutch Bros. and The Human Bean in Rocklin joined forces to raise money for fallen California Highway Patrol Officer Lucas Chellew. And raise money, they did.

Dutch Bros. locations in Sacramento, Carmichael, Fair Oaks, Davis, Dixon, Woodland, Citrus Heights and Granite Bay raised $66,877.

The Human Bean in Rocklin raised $9,228.

In total, the combined effort raised $76,000 in just one day to support the Chellew family, according to The Bee.

Donations have been collected by the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, a credit union serving active and retired safety personnel and their families.

Jill Alves, a spokeswoman with CAHP, noted other local businesses were raising funds as well, including SacTown Sports Bar, which made a single donation of $10,000.

Chellew died Feb. 22 while he pursued a suspect on a motorcycle in South Sacramento. Chellew, also on a motorcycle, lost control and crashed. The eight-year CHP veteran was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center where he would later die from his injuries. He was 31 years of age.

Chellew left behind a wife and a son and daughter.

CHP said suspect Alberto Quiroz, 26, of Sacramento was charged with felony evading, felony vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and felony resisting arrest.
