Deputies make arrest in shooting, house fire that left Sacramento man dead

Family members of Mike Plog gathered for a viewing Wednesday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento family is one step closer to justice after a shooting and house fire left a Marine veteran dead weeks ago.

On Wednesday, officials with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of two people in connection to the homicide of Mike Plog. Deputies identified the suspects as Michael Wheat and Dominic Perez. Officials said Perez was arrested in Southern California.

"He was my go-to guy; he was my rock," said Mary Plog, Mike's sister. "I just don’t know what I'm going to do without him."

Heartbreak and pain were still raw emotions for Mary Plog and her sisters at a viewing Wednesday as they get ready to lay their little brother to rest.

“A tree fell down, a fence fell down, it was Mike. He was always there," said Mike's sister Susan.

Whether being there to help his family or rescue abandoned dogs, to his sisters, Mike's actions spoke for themselves.

“He was just an amazing kindhearted person who would help anyone," said Mary. "He would stop by the car on the side of the road. He would do anything for anybody.”

That life of giving was cut short on Nov. 2 when his body was discovered shot inside his burning home on Del Norte Boulevard in Sacramento.

"I just can't imagine somebody doing this to him," said Mike's sister Sheryl.

Nearly two weeks since the shooting and house fire that took Mike's life, grief is still on the mind for his family as they mourn — but so is justice.

“That man will know my face," said Susan of the suspect in the case. "I will be at every parole hearing the rest of his life."

For now, Mike’s family is trying to fill a major void.

“This has left a hole in our hearts, in our family," said Susan. "Going forward without him is going to be really hard.”

Family members are asking that people donate to the Humane Society or Front Street Animal Shelter in Mike’s honor.
