Businesses that fly the American flag aren't required to follow flag code, but should they?

How long the White House flag remained at half-staff following Senator John McCain's death stirred national controversy, but locally, many wondered if businesses should follow suit.

How long the White House flag remained at half-staff following Senator John McCain's death stirred national controversy, but locally, many wondered if businesses should follow suit.

The flag code is only mandatory for federal buildings. When it comes to private businesses, Jim Faulkinbury of Sacramento believes they should also follow code as a sign of respect.

Faulkinbury is a member of the Sacramento chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The organization has nearly 40,000 members across the country, all with a common patriotic cause. To get into the group, you must have an ancestor who was part of the American Revolution.

"We try to convey the sacrifices our ancestors [made] and [the people] today continuing to fight to keep the nation free," explained Faulkinbury.

Faulkinbury said the group meets once a month and is focused on educating the public. They host various events and programs, mostly at schools.

"I think [businesses] should honor and respect the flag and everything that's in the code," said Faulkinbury. "When it's deteriorating, they should take down and burn [the flag] properly."

Hearing that some businesses aren't flying their flags at half-staff doesn't surprise Faulkinbury.

"We're losing touch with everything, [like] our constitution [and] what it really means, why it was formed the way it was form," said Faulkinbury. "[Our American institutions] need to be known today just as they were in those days."
