SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Thousands of athletes descended onto Sacramento this weekend for the 40th annual California International Marathon.
From Folsom to the California State Capitol, athletes ran the 26.2 mile trek.
Athletes from 42 countries and all 50 states completed the race dubbed the ‘fastest course in the west’ for its scenic views and downhill course. It gave athletes the chance to perform at their best.
The race also forced families and friends to come early and get a spot near the finish line.
“It is crazy that that is why I came here super early because I usually try to come here, and I have to fight through the crowds, so I am right here for him," said Christy Chung, who is supporting her boyfriend.
Race organizers say about 75,000 spectators lined the region’s streets on race day helping support the runners to the finish line.
CJ Albertson was the top male finisher with the time 2:11:09. Grace Kahura-Malang was the top female finisher with the time 2:29:00.
Kahura-Malang had extra motivation as she did not receive any help from the sidelines because her ailing coach was not in attendance.
“He is dealing with cancer and going through chemotherapy, so this win I dedicate to him as he goes through that treatment,” said Kahura-Malang.
Organizers say nearly a third of participants hope to qualify for the Boston Marathon, while a few others ran to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.
CIM spokesperson says Albertson and Kahura-Malang’s did qualify for the Trials. On the final day, 27 men and 14 women ultimately ran under qualifying times (2:18:00 for men and 2:37:00 for women) to punch their tickets to Florida for trials.
