California State Fair, Capital Airshow brace for heat wave heading into weekend

The opening of the State Fair and California Capital Air Show are here to kickstart the weekend.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — A lot is going on heading into the weekend for Sacramento, like the opening of the California State Fair or the California Capital Airshow. It all coincides with an ongoing heat wave in the area.

However, the events have plans to keep people cool. The state fair will feature cooling tents this year, which are set up by Jeannie Park, with Bonney Plumbing, Sewer, Electrical, Heating and air.

“We’ve got four cooling stations within the fair that will have fans, misters,” Park said.

If you aren’t near a cooling station, all the buildings at Cal Expo have air conditioning. There are also fans and misters at the table areas where you might be enjoying fair food.

One insider tip is to walk along the monorail track; it casts a shadow so you will always be in the shade. Park said the kid exhibit also has a lot of shade as well.

People will be allowed to bring in sealed plastic bottles of water too.

Just like last year, the state fair is filling all their lagoons and fountains to keep the overall area cool. If it’s 110 degrees outside, the pavement could be as hot as 140 degrees.

Whether someone is at Cal Expo or standing on the runway at the California Capital Airshow, it's going to be a scorcher.

Angela Terry, the director of operations with the air show, said they have taken every precaution to try and make the show enjoyable with the heat.

“It’s going to be the best ever. We are taking the air show and turning it upside down,” Terry said.

It is the hottest ticket in town, and you have the weather to thank for that. Due to triple digits, night shows are returning to the Capital Airshow after eight years.

“When the Frecce Tricolori wanted to add us to their first tour of North America in 32 years, we said yes right away, and they said July and we said, 'Oh, we need to do something a bit different,'” Terry said.

There are four cooling tents available this year, and shade has been added in the General Admission area.

“When you come through the gates, you can bring in sealed bottles of water to keep cool. You can even bring a small personal cooler with ice to keep yourself cool,” Terry said.

If anyone decides it is too hot to attend the airshow, they will not provide a refund, but they will put your purchase toward a ticket for next year. The state fair opens on Friday at Cal Expo.

Gates for the California Capital Air show at Mather Air Field open at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
