Northern California atmospheric river update: Chain controls on I-80

The storm is the first of two atmospheric river events forecast to hit the state in the next seven days.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — An atmospheric river storm is forecast to strike California, bringing heavy rain and wind.

The first storm, expected to arrive on Wednesday afternoon, will follow right on the heels of a period of record-warm temperatures for Northern California. There are a few watches and warnings out for Northern California ahead of the first storm, including a Flood WatchWinter Storm Warning, and a Wind Advisory

Chain Controls

According to Caltrans, chain control were put into place along westbound Interstate 80 from Donner Lake Interchange to Rainbow and eastbound Interstate 80 from Kingvale to Donner Lake Interchange.

State Operations

California Governor Gavin Newsom activated the State Operations Center Tuesday ahead of the storm which is expected to bring widespread impacts to the state.  

Organizations involved in preparing and responding include the Department of Water Resources, Caltrans, the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, CalFire, and the California Military Department.  On Wednesday the California Office of Emergency Services is offering five tips to stay safe over the coming week with two systems expected over the next week:

  1. Stay connected: Sign up for local emergency alerts at CalAlerts.org
  2. Get your information from trusted sources: Government, local news and meteorologists are trusted sources.
  3. Prepare for high winds: Avoid going outside, watch for flying debris
  4. Travel safely: Avoid non-essential travel during the storm
  5. Be ready in case of power outages: Charge your devices, have flashlights ready
