SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Recovery crews searched for a vehicle that reportedly flew off Highway 50's Pioneer Bridge and into the Sacramento River Tuesday night, police said.
Around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, what was described as a white flat bed tow truck plunged into the water after a two-car crash along the Pionner Bridge. South Sacramento CHP Area office and the CHP - Woodland responded to the crash since it happened just east of the Yolo/Sacramento County line.
Rescue teams were unable to locate anyone.
The Sacramento Drowning Accident Rescue Team [DART] will continue the search when the river is deemed safe enough for a recovery effort. In a press release, a representative for DART said they plan to involve divers and attempt to hook the tow truck to a tug boat, which will pull it to shore where it can then be retrieved.
"At this time, we do not have an estimated date for when this recovery operation will occur," the press release said.
DART found the vehicle using sonar technology in the middle of the Sacramento River approximately 30 feet under water.
