Sacramento signs contract to build public restroom in Cesar Chavez Plaza

The stainless steel walls are protected with an anti-graffiti coat that makes it easy to clean off, according to the city of Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — The "Portland Loo" is a single-stall restroom building made famous after the city of Portland designed them in effort to give homeless residents a place to use the restroom, as well as help crack down on illegal activity that happens in public restrooms.

Portland has since installed 15 in the city, and dozens of other cities across the U.S. and Canada have since followed suit.

Sacramento will be the next city to do so after scheduling to build one in Cesar Chavez Plaza a little over a year after the city council approved the project.

The Saenz Landscape Construction Company will install the restroom, which costs about $300,000 to build, according to the city of Sacramento. The city estimates the project will be completed by fall 2020.

The proposed restroom came with some controversy last year because Cesar Chavez Plaza is also the home to many in the homeless community. Lisa Berkenpas, who lives near downtown and walks through the park every day, told ABC10 that she's afraid the restroom would be vandalized and misused.

The restroom's stainless-steel walls are protected with an anti-graffiti clear coat that would make it hard to vandalized, according to the city of Sacramento. The same coating will make walls easy to clean off.

The restroom was created in Portland to "prevent problems that are commonly experienced with public toilets, such as crime, vandalism and deterioration," according to the manufacture's website.

Police officers could use the restroom's slats to see through if they are suspicious of illegal activity.

The restroom's hours are not available. Typical hours in the city are from sunrise to sunset, but the bathroom could probably stay open longer.
