SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — The Clean Cars 4 All program, working to help residents buy electric and hybrid vehicles, will be open to all Sacramento County residents after an announcement Thursday from the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District.
Residents in lower income communities will still be prioritized for the grants and they can now receive up to $12,000 for a hydrogen or battery-powered electric vehicle.
This is an increase from the initial maximum grant of up to $9,500.
Funding for e-bike purchases will now be available through the program as well.
The California Air Resources Board has funded $7 million to the program since it launched in March 2019.
Metropolitan Air Quality Management District representatives say they expect another $12 million grant will continue funding for Clean Cars 4 All through 2028.
As of 2024, the management district provided 1,090 grants which purchased 901 vehicles from dealerships participating in the Clean Cars 4 All program.
"These 901 vehicles will help to reduce 9,573 tons of green house gas emissions and 8.42 tons of criteria pollutants over their 30-month project life," Clean Cars 4 All program supervisors Cindy Mahon said during a Thursday meeting.
Of the residents who purchased new vehicles so far, more than half of them got an extra $2,000 to go toward charging support.
Mahon said the program will be paused throughout May to plan for future recipients, but is expected to relaunch in June.
Program applicants will be notified and given a chance to submit a new application under the updated maximum award amounts.
