SACRAMENTO, Calif. — 5.6% of the vote now separates Sacramento’s two mayoral candidates in the latest update of results Tuesday, after the gap was 10.4% the morning after Election Night.
Current Assemblymember Kevin McCarty’s lead over public health professional Dr. Flojaune “Flo” Cofer has further narrowed. He is now 7,584 votes ahead of his opponent. After the last vote count update on Friday, he was 9,228 votes in the lead.
This is all according to the latest update of ballot counts published by Sacramento County Tuesday afternoon. The next update is due on Friday.
Prior to Tuesday’s update, Cofer had 52,248 votes (45.94%), trailing 9,228 votes behind McCarty, who had 61,476 votes (54.06%).
Tuesday’s updated results show Cofer now has 63,759 votes (47.2%) and McCarty has 71,343 votes (52.8%). After Election Night, they were separated by 10.4% of the vote. They're now separated by 5.6%.
At this point, 144,978 ballots have been counted in this race, representing 51.63% of the 280,776 registered voters within Sacramento city limits. (That includes voters who either skipped the Sacramento mayoral race on their ballot or picked both candidates, thus invalidating their vote for mayor.)
While we won’t know the total voter turnout in this race until later, it’s likely many thousands more votes remain to be counted, given the high voter turnout predicted due to the presidential race. For example, if voter turnout ends up being 65%, that means there are still more than 37,000 ballots yet to be counted.
Vote-by-mail ballots that have yet to be counted must have been postmarked on or before Election Day and received by Nov. 12. The county has until Dec. 5 to certify final, official results.
The new mayor and two new city councilmembers will be sworn in at the Sacramento City Council’s Dec. 10 meeting.
