Man dies by suicide at SMF parking garage

The sheriff's office said no one else was hurt during the incident.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man took his own life at a SMF parking garage Wednesday evening.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Amar Gandhi said deputies had responded just after 8:30 p.m. after a caller said he wanted to take his own life. Deputies arrived to find the man inside a car by himself and tried to talk him out of the vehicle.

However, Gandhi said the man fired two shots, and when deputies approached, they learned he had taken his own life. The man was in parking garage by Terminal A. He was only identified as a 53-year-old man.

No one else was hurt, and Gandhi said there was no threat of an active shooter during the incident.

Alvaro Rodriguez, of Sacramento, was picking up his friend from the airport when he said he saw vehicles from the sheriff's office in the parking area.

“I could hear shouting coming from the parking lot and next thing you know, there's a single shot and then there was quiet,” said Rodriguez.

Michelangelo Gambacorta was visiting Rodriguez all the way from Italy and found himself temporarily stuck at the terminal.

"Suddenly, all of the doors just didn't have the green lights; they were red. I don't know the airport, so I said maybe I have to push a button or something, but then a lot of people started piling up and an employee-- we looked at him, and he said, 'I'm going to call someone to fix this,’” Gambacorta recounted. “After awhile - like, five minutes - another lady came in and said, 'This is going to take awhile. There's been an incident outside, so we're locked in here."

Airport operations returned to normal after the incident.
