3 people woken up, evacuated in duplex fire. Their smoke alarms didn’t work, firefighters said

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District showed up, searched both units and cleared out three people who were originally asleep at the time of the fire, crews said.

NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. — Three people woken up after a fire broke out at a duplex early Sunday morning in Sacramento County reportedly did not have working smoke alarms in their building, authorities said.

Just before 5 a.m., Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews said they responded to the 4500 block of Bomark Way in North Highlands to a duplex with fire showing from the backside of the home. Fire personnel searched both units and evacuated three people asleep when the fire broke out.

The fire actively burned in the attic, and flames showed through the roof, creating potential for embers to fly onto other structures and vegetation, firefighters said. Crews reportedly deployed hoses to both units and kept the fire within the building of origin.

No injuries were reported, and the fire is under investigation, authorities said.

Firefighters said they encourage people to check their smoke alarms every month and to practice home fire escape plans.
