SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Fairytale Town is set to open a new Welcome Center in April of 2024 designed for new playset attractions and cultural heritage recognition, city officials said Thursday.
First opened in 1959, the 3.5 acre kids' storybook theme park in William Land Park has been a staple for family fun in the community for decades.
The $2.5 million construction project also means visitors are advised to use the express gate entrance instead of the usual Humpty Entrance. But fear not, there are plenty other fairytale characters to greet you at the park.
District 6 Councilmember Eric Guerra said Thursday he remembered going to Fairytale Town as a child farm worker.
"Migrant education put us on a bus and brought us over here to experience Fairytale Town and give us in our region hope," he said. "Now, my kids come to Fairytale Town for the summer camp. They got a chance watch Maddie the cow. Unfortunately, Maddie the cow is now on retirement."
However, it's not just city and state funds, Guerra said community members and partners helped raise money to make the construction happen.
Fairytale Town Executive Director Kevin Smith-Fagan presented a crossbeam for everyone at the announcement Thursday to sign before adding it to the construction project.
"The kids who are here today will bring their kids here someday and your signature will be baked inside (the Welcome Center)," he said. "Between your contributions and city and state support (we) were able to cobble together the funding making it possible to get to today with the new welcome center taking shape behind us."
