On Friday, the Garrett family received the call that their son's killer had been found and arrested.
"Thank you Jesus. My prayers have been answered," said Tanya Bean-Garrett. "I just wanted justice."
Two weeks ago, the Garretts sat down with ABC10 to reflect on a young life lost too soon. 19-year-old Deston Garrett was a former Sac High football player, better known as "Nutter." He was shot and killed a few days before graduating. Instead of celebrating a graduation, the family had to prepare for a funeral.
"My son didn't deserve this," said Bean-Garrett. "For someone to come in your home and violate you like that. It's unbelievable.
Sacramento sheriff's deputies say 23-year-old Fredrick Marshall was arrested Thursday night at his home. He was at Garrett's home when the shooting happened. Investigators found out that Garrett and Marshall were friends. Marshall shot Garrett after an argument.
"It makes you double check everything, everybody," said Bean-Garrett. "I would never think he'd bring a gun in my house. He would've never been invited in my house."
Garrett was known as the friend who always welcomed everyone into his home. Now, his home is a little quiet and his loved one's hearts are emptier.
"It's empty. It's horrible," said Bean-Garrett." I do have two other sons and I know I have to be there for them but a piece of me is gone.
Garrett may be gone, but he'll never be forgotten. His parents vow to keep his spirit alive by fighting against youth violence. Bean-Garrett is already planning to get together with other mothers who have lost their children in shootings.
"We're going to get together as mothers. We're gonna console, we're gonna hug, we're gonna laugh, we're gonna cry, we're gonna talk about putting a stop to this gun violence," said Bean-Garrett. ""This has to stop."
Marshall is in jail on $100,000 bail on voluntary manslaughter charges. He'll appear in court for arraignment on Monday.
