Family of pregnant Rio Linda woman hit in DUI crash faces suspect in court

"My family is very broken right now. We'll never be repaired. He's killed my grandson."

Tuesday was an emotional day for the family of the Rio Linda woman, whose baby died after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a car that hit them.

According to investigators with the California Highway Patrol, 23-year-old Ronny Ward's blood alcohol level was three times the .08 legal limit at the time of the crash.

Ciara Villegas, who was six months pregnant, had to have an emergency C-section. Her baby did not make it and died at the hospital a few days later.

"My family is very broken right now. We'll never be repaired. He's killed my grandson," said Ciara Villegas' mom, Latisha Strianese. "He's messed my daughter's life up."

Strianese was in court Tuesday when a judge read Ward's charges, which include two felony DUI charges. The judge also increased Ward's bail from $150,000 to $1,000,000.

"They're not going to have murder charges brought against him at this time, but as a family, we are going to fight and dig and do whatever we need to do to bring those charges on against him," Srianese said.

Ward is scheduled to be back in court on June 11 at 8:30 a.m. As for Villegas, Strianese told ABC10 she is still recovering in the hospital.

"There [are] days she can't breathe. She looks like a fish out of water trying to just grasp air," Strianese explained.
