3 geese at a pond in Sacramento's Land Park test positive for bird flu

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says three dead geese found at a Land Park pond tested positive for avian influenza.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Three birds found dead in Sacramento's Land Park pond have tested positive for avian influenza, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Sacramento resident Judy McClaver brought in several geese to the CDFW a couple of weeks ago after she noticed several dead geese at the Mayor Anne Rudin Peace Pond in Land Park.

She brought in four geese to be tested, but only three could be tested. Two Candian geese and one domestic goose tested positive.

"Virus activity appears to have picked up in recent weeks as fall migration as gotten underway, and waterfowl are returning to many parts of the state to overwinter," the department said in a news release.

A spokesperson for the Department of Fish and Wildlife says they have been monitoring the situation closely.

“We take that with the utmost seriousness and a lot of care and compassion as well,” Peter Tira previously told ABC10.

For now, there are only a few things nature lovers can do. One is to report dead birds to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. The other is not to feed them foods that could be harmful to their health such as bread, crackers and cookies. Instead, they can be given waterfowl pellets.

People can report dead fish or wildlife to the department through a form HERE.
