SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A 17-year-old Grant Union High School student was shot and taken to a hospital Tuesday morning, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Police said the shooting involved two male students and while the circumstances leading up to the shooting aren't clear, the police described it as a targeted attack. A 14-year-old student was detained near the campus, by Balsam Street and Grand Avenue, and was taken to juvenile hall.
The student shot was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Twin Rivers Unified School District. There is no outstanding threat to the public or students, according to police.
"It is a targeted shooting, not an active school shooter or anything like that," said a spokesperson for the police department.
Police say they responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area around 9:48 a.m. along with calls about a shooting on campus property.
The school was on lockdown as police investigated and it was lifted around 12:30 p.m. School will resume Tuesday but parents can pick their students up from the Grant West Campus. Police are continuing to investigate.
"We are shocked and saddened to hear of the events that led to a Twin Rivers student being shot at Grant High School," said the district in a statement. "Psychologists and counselors are available for students and staff to share and process this event."
