Hundreds of Sacramento TSA workers impacted by government shutdown

“We have a lot of single parents, you know they have kids in daycare. They have to take care of that. They have their rent, or their mortgage, and especially at this time of the year.”

About 300 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees working at the Sacramento International Airport have been furloughed or are working without pay, according to local labor union President James Mudrock.

Mudrock is with the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1230, which represents TSA employees in Sacramento and across California.

“It’s very difficult, especially for people with families,” Mudrock said of the government shutdown. “We have a lot of single parents, you know they have kids in daycare. They have to take care of that. They have their rent, or their mortgage, and especially at this time of the year.”

More workers in California than any other state except the District of Columbia have been affected by the partial shutdown, according to a report by the Center for American Progress.

More than 39,000 federal employees from California are believed to have been furloughed or are working without pay.

Mudrock says some workers told him they may not be able to afford gas to work if the shutdown continues much longer.
