Inmate death being investigated as homicide after fight, officials say

California State Prison, Sacramento officials are investigating the death of Darryl W. Hudson on Friday as a homicide after he was involved in a fight.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC) officials are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide. Officials say Darryl W. Hudson was involved in a fight Thursday and died at the hospital due to his injuries Friday.

The fight involved five other incarcerated individuals: Darryn W. Mayberry, Robert M. Keller, Tray Watson, Marcell L. Battiest, and Otis Wyatt.

Hudson and the others allegedly fought in a dayroom, during which officials say Mayberry struck Hudson several times, causing him to lose consciousness. 

Emergency services were immediately called and Hudson was transported to a local hospital. Hudson was pronounced dead at 6:11 PM Friday at the hospital. No staff or other incarcerated individuals were hurt during the incident.

Following the incident, movement in the yard where the fight occurred has been restricted. Mayberry, Keller, Watson, Battiest, and Wyatt have been placed in restricted housing as the investigation continues.
