Large smoking groups outside UC Davis Medical Center | 10 On Your Side

10 On Your side got results after a woman raised concerns about a large group of smokers outside the hospital, not far from her home.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — 10 On Your Side is getting results for a fed up viewer in Sacramento.

Amy Mattingly sent ABC10 the following:

"I am a resident of the Elmhurst neighborhood, just behind the UC Davis Medical Center. As you may know, the UC Davis Med Center is a non-smoking campus, which is great, but it has caused large groups of smokers to designate the area right outside of my residence as their personal smoking lounge. Both my landlord and I have contacted UC Davis's Community Outreach Department and my landlord has had constant battles regarding this to no avail. Perhaps 10 On My Side can help!"

"Along with not just the trash and the smell of the smoke but also just the noise, there would noise and kind of like it was a breakroom outside of my house," Amy said.

ABC10 went straight to UC Davis Health, and they released this statement saying:

"We appreciate the concern raised by your viewer. The University of California has had a smoke and tobacco free policy in place on all of its campuses for a decade. Employees receive regular messages in newsletters and in team meetings to be good neighbors — to avoid loitering, smoking or littering in the surrounding area — because caring for the community matters both inside and outside of our facilities."

ABC10 plans to follow up to make sure this problem doesn't persist.
